Illustration Friday: Journey
April 20th, 2011I’ve joined the weekly illustration challenge of Illustration Friday! (You can find out more about this here and while you’re at it, why not join in on the weekly fun!) This week’s theme is “Journey” and for it I embarked on my first ever free motion sewing exercise combined with some applique. Overall dimensions are about 6.75″ x 7.25″ (17 x 18cm).
As you can see it’s pretty wonky as I still have to get the hang of it or I could say that it is intentional because I wanted to depict the rough sea ^-^. All the crafting pros say to practice, practice and then practice some more, so I guess that’s what I’ll be doing (there is still hope – hence the star – for me yet!). Here is a picture of the back view.
This free motion sewing exercise is based on a little lino print I did — let me think as it was a long time ago — back in 1998 (?!) — that I titled “Star Voyage”. The actual image is about 3.75″ x 2.75″ (9.5 x 7cm) printed on some ochre/yellow card stock.
For the “Journey” applique I used some fabric scraps that are from Riley Blake Designs – Felicity and Feeling Groovy Collections (also available at my Etsy Shop) and the background is onasburg cotton.
Whatever you do on your journey, even if it’s not perfect, make sure you have some fun!
That is gorgeous. Do you mind if i ask what kind of machine you have? mine does not have any free motion options :(
Hi Dara, Thanks for your comment! I have a Brother Machine and to do free motion I bought an open toe foot for it. The other thing that is important is to lower the feed dogs of your machine. The lever is located on the back of my machine. I think all machines should have the option of lowering the feed dogs and hopefully you still have the manual to your machine. Hope that helps!
