Our Brown Eyed Golden Girl
January 24th, 2014She wandered into our lives one fine afternoon, a little bundle of golden fur with her head hanging low and tail wagging, greeting us sheepishly in our front yard.
We have no idea where she came from, but it was love at first sight for Miss A, followed immediately by, “Can we keep her?” I, too, was secretly wanting that and hoping she didn’t belong to anyone.
Our neighbors said she just showed up at their front door, lost, hungry and filthy, so they took her in, fed her, gave her a bath and hair cut. Our neighbors were also kind enough to give her to us, even though they wanted to keep her. I guess they couldn’t resist Miss A’s desire for such a cute dog.
Because she was a stray, we don’t know for certain what mix she is. Definitely a long hair chihuahua, possibly crossed with a Jack Russell? Even though she’s a mutt, she has turned out beautifully and I’m so glad we’ve given a homeless dog a loving home.
Curled up she takes up less than a square foot. She weighs less than 6 pounds, but is worth her weight in gold.
She’s sweet natured, fun, full of joy and personality and absolutely loves, loves, loves kids.
Life really is better with our brown eyed golden girl. We love her and think she’s the best dog ever!
Update: October 2015
Our Golden Girl 2.5 years later. She’s filled out in body and fur, weighing in around 7 pounds. I did a pencil drawing from a photo I took of her and call this, “Portrait of a Lady”.
I got a dog that looks exactly like your’s.She’s only 11 months old right now, i couldn’t find what the mix is and there aren’t that many pictures with this kind of dog breed or information. We got here when she was 6 months old, This kind of dog breed is super smart.
I was trying to determine my new girl’s breed and came across this photo. The name she was given at Muttville was ‘Golden Girl’ and she looks a whole lot like your precious lady! She too was a stray, found on the streets of Fresno, with breast cancer, intact, flea ridden, mangy, skinny and coughing. I wish I could attach a photo! She is so sweet and gorgeous now. Her name is Grace aka Gracie Lou.
I googled pictures of different breeds because i was unsure of what breed my dog is and i saw your picture and they look almost identical. I’ve come to a guess that my dog is a long hair chihuahua mixed with jack russel. I’ve done so much research and I’m almost certain thats what she is.
Today, my sweet honey passed away. When I adopted her 10 years ago, she look just like the skinny little puppy in the pictures… And she also developed into a beautiful little lady. She’s been our only for you baby since we were married, Who we are dying to know what breed she might’ve been mixed with… If anyone has any idea, please reach out.
i enjoyed your story and pix today, gorgeous baby
Look up the breed kokoni, I think I have the same breed
OMG I have a male that is identical to her!! Colors hair and all! I rescued him as well vet said he is a long haired Chiuahua but not like one i have ever seen! She is beautiful they are amazing and such smart dogs!
Awwww…they really are sweet little dogs…so happy to hear that you also rescued yours :)
I was looking for a picture of a chihuahua when I stumbled across this sweet girl’s picture. You see, we have a soft spot in the heart of our family for small dogs, and currently we have 3 that reside there full time. But what struck me about your girl’s picture is how much she looks like my childhood dog Sandy. She was a mutt that my parents rescued from the pound for $5 (that was the going rate in 1982). Sandy let us love her until arthritis and sickness made her quality of life nil and we let her gently go in 1992. We never could figure out what mix she was. We figured part terrier and part human. She smiled almost on cue. She adored green beans and watermelon. My Mom taught her to suck spaghetti. She wasn’t just some mere alpha dog, she was the queen. Our other (much larger male) dog couldn’t get away with anything. Sandy knew the difference between going to the bed for the night or if we were leaving, even though the pattern of movement for us was the same. She taught me to love the unloved – which is why my family now has 4 rescue dogs. I want to thank you so much for sharing your girl’s pictures and reading all my rambling. Have a fabulous day!!!
What a lovely story, thank you so much for sharing :) Our Goldie actually loves to eat coconut flakes and knows to go to her little bed when I tell her it’s bedtime!
