Always one to be on the look out for bargains, I had bought some cork coasters from IKEA. They were cheap and looked good, but after only a few uses, they started to warp and tear. Since I have been doing more sewing, my fabric scrap pile has been growing quite high. One night while making some cotton backed wash cloths, I thought to myself, “why not make coasters out of my fabric scraps!” I’m sure I’m not the first to come up with this idea, but I thought I would share it anyway.

How to Make Fabric Coasters:

1. Pick out your fabric – you will need at least a 5″x5″ (approx 12cmx12cm) square of fabric for the front and back. You can make them bigger if you want, say 6″ x 6″. I use fleece as padding for the middle of the coasters. You can use another fabric as well, such as flannel, or even interfacing, but I have found that the fleece is a good thickness and seems to work well.

2. Stack the 3 pieces together, starting with the fleece, back piece and then front piece. Back and front pieces have the right sides facing each other. pin together if you want, but I am lazy and didn’t. You may find that it’s small enough to handle without pinning.

3. Sew about a 3/8″ (1cm) seam around, you can also use 1/4″ seams. Leave about a 2″ (5cm) opening on one side.

4. Trim the corners and 3 sides to about 1/8″ (4mm). I don’t trim the side with the opening because after turning it right side out, I want to have enough turned fabric to be able to sew the opening closed.

5. Turn coaster right side out and press flat with an iron.

6.Top stitch all the way around – I usually start at the opening 1/8″ (4mm) from the edge and then around again 1/8″ (4mm) from the first stitch. Finito!

You can even use an old towel for the backing and use a narrow zig-zig stitch for the edging.

Or just have the fleece as the backing if you don’t have a matching fabric for the back.

Here is a stack of coasters I made for my mother-in-law.

Happy sewing!
